Remarks: The diagnosis of the nominate variety is very poor and may also relate to some forms of Staurodesmus convergens. Remarkably, Kutzing refers to a figure of Bailey (1841) that is not strikingly different from Smith's depiction of S. subulatus var. nordstedtii. Both Bailey's and Smith's specimens were collected from the northwestern United States.
